Not that kind of yoga

When Auntie says "yoga" here, she does not mean downward dog. In Vedic astrology, a yoga is a combination — specifically, a quality produced by the relationship between the Sun and Moon on any given day. It is one of the five elements of the panchang, the traditional Vedic almanac that Auntie checks every single morning.

There are 27 yogas, and they cycle through in a fixed sequence. Each one colours the day with a particular energy — some auspicious, some challenging, some a mix of both. Think of it as the mood the sky is holding. You cannot change it, but you can work with it.

The yoga is calculated by adding the Sun's longitude and Moon's longitude together, then dividing by 13 degrees and 20 minutes. It is the same division size as a nakshatra, which is not a coincidence — both systems carve the sky into 27 pieces. But while nakshatras track where the Moon sits, yogas track how the Sun and Moon relate to each other.

How to read them

Each yoga falls into one of three categories: auspicious, inauspicious, or mixed. But do not panic when you see an inauspicious yoga. It does not mean the day is cursed — it means the day carries a particular kind of friction, and awareness is your best tool.

An auspicious yoga like Siddhi means things you start are more likely to succeed. An inauspicious yoga like Vyaghata means conflicts might surface more easily. Neither one overrides your free will. They just set the backdrop.

Auntie shows you the daily yoga in the panchang card so you can calibrate. On a Shula day, maybe do not pick that fight. On a Brahma day, create something. Simple, practical, no drama.
